This evening, the City Council tabled a motion to confirm the Mayor’s appointment of Jerry Evans as the permanent municipal judge for the City of Hattiesburg.

It is for these reasons we tabled the motion to approve a permanent replacement, until we can address fundamental changes in how our municipal court operates.

It was my understanding that Chief Bolton was raising questions a year ago and asking that the city address the structure of the court then. Nothing seemed to happen, however, until all these major issues came out. I’m just surprised it took this long considering what I know about working inside the system and how rumors, etc. spread.

I definitely agree with your statement that the system needs to be fixed first although bringing the court to a standstill seems problematical. Could a temporary judge be named, pending addressing the overall issues and making changes?

To have the court be overseen by the PD seems to be a major flaw – they need to focus on their own duties, and the current system to me raises questions of appropriateness – too much intermingling of those giving testimony and those ruling on it.

Stick to your guns about fixing the system. I have been very disappointed to see this happening.

  2. Very good to hear this, Mr. Ware. It is obvious to me that the members of the city council recognize the problems that our Mayor has attempted to sweep under the rug. Citizens want the truth and it is refreshing to get that from our city council. The council gets it. Mayor Johnny Dupree obviously does not.
